Abstract:Objective To compare the feasibility of different arch expansion therapies in adult patients with transverse growth deficiency of maxillary dental arch stenosis. Methods 86 patients who needed maxillary arch expansion were randomly divided into group A(43 cases)and group B(43 cases).Group A was treated withmicroimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion(MARPE)while group B was given rapid maxillary expansion(RME).The anterior and posterior midpalatal suture widths, nasal cavity width, nasal base bone width, maxillary alveolar width, width between first molars, left and right molar inclinations, and left and right alveolar ridge heights were measured and compared between the two groups before treatment and after 3 months of treatment. Results After 3 months of arch expansion therapy, the anterior and posterior midpalatal suture widths, nasal cavity width, nasal base bone width, maxillary alveolar width, width between first molars and width of first tooth apex were significantly enhanced in the two groups compared to before treatment(P<0.05),and the above indicators in group A were significantly wider than those in group B at the same time point(P<0.05).The inclinations of left and right molars in group A had no significant changes compared with those before treatment(P>0.05),but were significantly lower than those in group B(P<0.05).The inclinations of left and right molars in group B were increased after 3 months of treatment compared to before treatment(P<0.05).Conclusion Compared with RME,MARPE can better effectively develop the midpalatal suture in adults with transverse growth deficiency of maxillary dental arch stenosis, and MARPE has better expansion effect and can reduce the side effects caused by correction force during dental arch expansion.
