Evaluation of the Effect of the Integration of Physical Therapy and Medicine Model based on Patient-reported Outcomes in the Rehabilitation of Patients with Degenerative Meniscus Tear

Abstract：Objective To evaluate the efficacy of a structured "integration of physical and medical rehabilitation" model based on patient-reported outcomes(PROs)in the rehabilitation of patients with degenerative meniscal tears following arthroscopic meniscal repair. Methods A randomized controlled study was conducted,enrolling 72 patients admitted from January to August 2024,who were randomly divided into a control group(n=36)and an intervention group(n=36).The control group received routine home rehabilitation guidance postoperatively,while the intervention group underwent a 4-week,three-phase structured "integration of physical and medical rehabilitation" exercise program.Knee joint function(IKDC score),quality of life(KOOS total score),pain level(VAS score),range of motion,return to activity(Tegner score),and overall satisfaction were assessed preoperatively and at 1,3,and 6 months postoperatively. Results A total of 69 patients completed follow-up.The baseline characteristics of the two groups were comparable(P>0.05).Repeated-measure ANOVA revealed that the intervention group demonstrated significantly better outcomes than the control group in both IKDC scores and KOOS total scores at 3 and 6 months postoperatively.Additionally,the intervention group exhibited significantly superior VAS walking pain scores at all postoperative time points,greater joint range of motion at 6 months,higher Tegner scores,and higher overall satisfaction(P=0.044). Conclusion The structured "physiotherapy-integrated" rehabilitation model based on PROs effectively promotes functional recovery in patients with degenerative meniscus tears,significantly alleviates pain,improves quality of life and mobility,and enhances patient satisfaction,representing a superior postoperative rehabilitation strategy compared to conventional home-based rehabilitation.
