Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of topiramate tablets and sodium valproate on electroencephalogram(EEG) in elderly patients with epilepsy. Methods A total of 78 elderly patients with epilepsy were selected as the test subjects. They were divided into a study group and a control group by using random number table,39 cases each. The control group was treated with sodium valproate, and the research group was treated with topiramate tablets. The changes in seizure frequency, duration of seizures, and EEG tests(epileptic discharge, number of leads involved) were compared before and after 3 months of treatment in the two groups. Results After 3 months of treatment, the frequency of seizures and duration of seizures in the two groups were lower than before treatment, and the study group was lower than the control group over the same period(both P<0.05).The number of epilepsy-like discharges and the number of leads involved in the two groups were lower than before treatment, and the study group was lower than the control group over the same period(both P<0.05).There was no significant difference in adverse reactions between the two groups during the treatment(both P>0.05).Conclusion Topiramate tablets are more effective than sodium valproate in elderly patients with epilepsy, and have more obvious improvements in EEG.They are safer and are beneficial to their prognosis.
